Traffic update: A35, Winterbourne Abbas

Traffic works have begun on the A35 in Winterbourne Abbas.  The works are part of the construction phase of our VIP project in Dorset.

Traffic works are needed to create a new site entrance from the A35 west of Winterbourne Abbas. Once the entrance is in place, we can start to enhance the local landscape by replacing 8.8km of overhead line with underground cable.

Due to the importance of the A35 to local people, businesses and tourists, we will work throughout the night to keep traffic flowing during the day. We have agreed with Highways England and Dorset Council that work will be carried out between 20:00 and 06:00. During this time one lane of the A35 will remain closed to traffic to allow for a safe distance to be maintained between our workers and the live traffic lane which will be under two-way traffic light control. At no time will the A35 be fully closed.

The work is planned to take place from Monday 30th September 2019 and continue for up to eight weeks.

Throughout the duration of works we will be monitoring noise and vibration levels to ensure our impact on surrounding residents remains as low as possible. To minimise risk while ensuring site safety, Dorset Council has recommended that our vehicles use white noise reversing beacons.

The works will be undertaken by Morgan Sindall and its subcontractor M J Church. A team of approximately twelve will be on duty each night to perform the works, supported by two traffic management personnel.

Measures have been put in place to ensure the River Winterbourne continues to carry water during the entrance construction and for the main project works with the installation of a box culvert. The construction methods used will ensure that the River Winterbourne continues to flow at its usual capacity, so at no time will the works affect the risk of flooding in the local area.
