Traffic update: October 2020

Roman Road & Coombe Road temporary closures

Details of upcoming road closures and diversions around the project area.

Roman Road: closed 1 October 2020 for one day

On Thursday 1 October 2020, Roman Road will be closed between 9:30 and 15:30 on the approach to Town Hill. An official diversion via the A35 will be clearly signposted. The closure is needed to safely resurface a 50-metre section of worn carriageway.

Coombe Road: closed 12 October 2020 – 5 November 2020

Separately, from 12 October 2020 until 5 November 2020, Coombe Road will be closed in both directions between its junction with the B3159 and Loscombe Plantation, a distance of 260 metres.

Please note that due to the recent poor weather it has been necessary to extend the closure by an additional six days, which will allow us to complete the resurfacing work that had to be suspended at the beginning of lockdown in March.  An official diversion will be signposted as follows: Coombe Road – Portesham Hill – B3157 – A354 – A35 – Steepleton Pounds Road – Coombe Road.  Please note that roads around Coombe Road including Blagdon Hill, are not suitable for HGVs or heavy traffic.

Access for pedestrians will be provided throughout both of these road closures. It will also be possible for cyclists to dismount and push their bikes safely through the closed sections of road. However, we would encourage people to use the official diversion or other alternative routes where possible.

The emergency services have been informed of both closures and have been made aware of the diversions.  Local schools and school buses will also be told of the closures and the alternative routes.  We would urge all parents and carers to plan ahead to avoid delays.

The Dorset VIP project affects a key part of national infrastructure that keeps the lights on today, tomorrow and into the future.  Our people who need to continue working on site and in the community are doing so under stringent health and safety measures to protect not just themselves but also the communities in which they operate, and these measures are being regularly reviewed.

We want to reassure residents and businesses that we are doing all we can to minimise disruption.  Throughout the closure, access to homes and businesses along these roads will be maintained.
